The brief

Adair is a five-bedroom cottage that was already furnished, and it photographed as three different houses. We kept the pieces that held, replaced the ones that did not, and tied the porch to the last bedroom with the same woods and wools. The owner needed a refresh that a guest would not clock as a restyle.

Photographs

Adair kitchen with a white island, wood stools, and a window over the sink
We left the kitchen stools for four. A group house would have asked for more.
Bedroom at Adair with a made bed, a leather bench, and a beamed ceiling
The bedroom uses the same oak as the living room so the cottage does not change floors.
Front porch at Adair with wicker seating, a coffee table, and a swing at the far end
We kept the porch in the frame so the living room still belongs to the yard.
Bath at Adair with green tile in the shower and a white honeycomb floor
The bath resets from the vanity. Housekeeping does not open a closet for the towels.
Adair sitting room with two sofas facing a round table under a beamed ceiling
Two sofas. We did not add a third seat that would never be used.
Adair kitchen island with two wood stools and a path to the dining room
The island holds breakfast for two so the dining room can stay set.

Outcome

The listing now reads as one cottage, and the owner kept the bones we asked them to keep.
